Karen spun in a circle, taking in the breathtaking beauty of everything she saw. Julie on the other hand…

“I—I don’t understand,” she gasped. “Where’s the hotel?”

“This is the hotel,” said Karen.

Julie’s eyes narrowed. “Wait. What?”

“They build this place every year,” Tyler explained. “And every year it melts away. Each year they re-make it, add to it. The best ice-artists are invited to come help decorate — they take days and weeks to put up all kinds of different theme rooms.”

“The rooms are ice?” Julie asked incredulously.

Karen looked at Tyler. They both chuckled.

“Yes,” they said in unison.

Now Julie actually looked worried. “No way…”

Tyler led them to the hotel desk, which of course was a solid block of beautiful crystal ice. He began talking to the concierge.

“Wait until you see the ice bar,” said Karen. “I haven’t seen any photos from this year yet, but I’m sure it’s going to be amazing.”

Karen didn’t know what was more entertaining — the ice hotel itself, or Julie’s wide-eyed reaction to it. She must’ve seen two or three specials on multiple ice hotels on television. This one, she knew, was the grandest though. The ice hotel that started it all.

“And the rooms have heat, right?” Julie asked hopefully. She looked legitimately worried.

“Nope. Heat melts the ice.”

“But…”

“Hey, we’ll have lots of blankets,” said Karen with a shrug. “And each other!”

She was already getting excited. Watching the different ice hotels on television had always been a thrill. But to be here, inside one? And to actually stay the night?

“Alright,” Tyler said as he came back. “We’re all set.”

“Which room did we get?” Karen asked excitedly. She’d seen theme rooms with everything ranging from ice-sculpted sea creatures, to polar bear caves, to rooms with carved likenesses of the Greek and Nordic gods.

“Which room do you think we got?” Tyler asked.

Both girls looked at each other and shrugged.

“The honeymoon suite, of course!”
